Insights: News Kilpatrick Townsend Establishes Inclusive Coffee January 22, 2019 On Monday, January 21^st, our country reflected on the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. King was a voice for justice and equality for all people in the United States and around the world. In what is probably his most well-known speech, Dr. King expressed hope that “one day on the red hills of Georgia, sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave-owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.” While the “table of brotherhood” is symbolic, at the time of Dr. King’s “I Have A Dream” Speech, segregation laws prevented White and Black people from sitting together at tables in many public places. Thanks to the sacrifice of Dr. King and others like him, we are all able to do something as simple as sit and have coffee together. Thus, in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the Firm is launching Inclusive Coffees. During the week of January 21^st, we invite attorneys and staff to expand their network and have a candid conversation and a cup of coffee with someone of a different race, ethnicity, or religion. Conversations that are rooted in trust, and that come from a place of positive intent, can be instrumental in moving the needle on how we foster a culture of inclusion. Familiarity and comfort are the foundation of trust. This MLK week, be open, authentic, engaged, comfortable being uncomfortable, non-judgmental, and understanding; engage in honest, respectful dialogue; and honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by helping make America—and our Firm—a better, more inclusive place for all.
